#TarotThursdayThree

Hey, glad you’re back! This week’s prompts have been provided by Ania, and as always, hosted by Spiral Sea Tarot. So sit back, enjoy a cuppa tea and have fun reading our personal takes on the same 3 questions – ps. see their posts linked above!

If you could design your own tarot deck and have it mass-produced, what theme would it have and what would it look like overall?

Okay, this is seriously the mother of all tarot questions! Wow. If I could create my dream deck, it would definitely be on the more modern, edgy, yet ethereal side – vibrant colours with a painterly quality, defined by crisp black outlines: think Magic and Manifestation Affirmation Cards. I love contrast so a good amount of both black and white cards for balance. Matte cardstock for sure. A gilded edge and hints of gold dripping throughout the deck would make the cards feel so magical, sparkling in candlelight (inspired by the Golden Universal Tarot I just picked up and am drooling over!). I’m obsessed with anything holographic, so definitely add that in there too (oh hi, Luminous Spirit).

Combine elements from these three gorgeous specimens to create my dream deck baby!

As for style, I would keep the RWS imagery but create Court cards in such a way that brought them to life – illustrated with clear facial expressions, more movement and deeper, juicier symbols so they appear to be living and breathing their suit, clearly relishing in Wand or Sword energy! No flat or basic 2D drawings, and no statuesque poses!

I thought this was pretty cool – similarly to Julia from Spiral Sea, I’ve also been playing with the idea of creating a deck (oracle, not tarot). As an artsy gal, I’m painting any chance I get and began sketching out a few conceptual ideas last summer while in my Akashic Records (whole other interesting story!). But man, I know the entire process will be an intense labour of love… to undertake a project of this magnitude seems daunting, already. Where to even begin?! Maybe one day I can set aside time to focus on this and get my creative juices flowing.

How do you feel about the Celtic Cross spread?

I like it, but don’t use it frequently for myself. Because I pull cards a few times weekly, doing the Celtic Cross on top of that would just be overkill. However, I do use it for friends when there is time to sit around, enjoy a pot of coffee or crack open a bottle of wine while discussing the cards/situation at hand in further detail. I often use it to look into specific questions but find that it works just as well grasping general overviews.

Ultimately, it fits nicely on a Friday night agenda!

If you could have any deck in the whole world (that you do not already), which one would you pick and why?

Because I’ve been infatuated since day one and religiously watched the cartoon and still to this day collect stuffed animals, notebooks, figurines, mugs (anything really!) – I would love to own the ever-elusive Hello Kitty tarot deck! Apparently it’s pretty rare, and I’m not even sure which version is actually authentic! Online I’ve found numerous styles: a cute cotton-candy coloured version, a RWS-inspired deck, a black and white version, borderless…ugh. I do know a real one was made, although probably out of print, and any remaining decks are likely really expensive now. And considering her re-emergence and “HK-craze” of this new generation, I wouldn’t be surprised if the cost soared into a 3 or 4-digit price range!

If anyone has pointers on which version is real, I’d love to hear from you and have that bit of information at the very least! But until I physically acquire this deck, my tarot and HK collections will both be incomplete… (so overdramatic, I know).

Okay, I think that’s it for me! Hope you enjoyed these tarot tidbits. Until next Thursday, my friends – see you on Instagram!

  1. Oh the hello Kitty deck would be awesome to owe…Same with the Sailor Moon deck though the one I’m familiar with it both expensive and only 22 cards.

I love the amount of detail you included in question one. I already feel like I can envision your future deck! Gilded edges for sure…Would be a must for mine as well. This is all I know for sure lol.

    1. Ah, yes! Sailor Moon would be such a great addition too! Only the Majors, eh? Could be interesting. Ps. Loved your Instagram post… SM, crystals and cards is my kinda shelf decor haha.

Omg thinking about starting a giant art project gives me anxiety lol. The level of detail, the revisions… I’m not sure it would ever get done. So I’ll just keep dreaming of those glittery gold accents – makes everything better hehe

  2. Hmmmm no tips on the hello kitty deck unfortunately.

But the deck you designed sounds dreamy! I really love your idea for the court cards 🙂 and I didn’t even think about the cardstock *duh* haha

  3. I would love for you to make your deck, especially the way you described the court cards, that would help me out a lot when I get those pesky cards! Did you know that @otmoraclecards is having a deck creation challenge in March or May? It might be a good start to get your creative juices flowing!

I remember seeing a post on IG about the HK tarot (Only the Major Arcana) being available for you to print yourself, it was a long time ago though. And self-printed decks are not as nice as professionally printed, but it might give you a start.

    1. Right! It’s hard to distinguish the Courts sometimes… are they energies or people? The eternal question that plagues tarot readers lol. So having them appear more fluid and life-like could certainly help the storyline come together.

Ooooh, I wasn’t aware of this challenge! I recently just started following @otmoraclecards so I will definitely check it out. Sounds so fun, thanks for sharing!

I would have no idea where to print a deck, so that option for HK tarot is kind of annoying 😐 You’re right – the quality just wouldn’t be the same. Appreciate your info on this, Dianna!

  4. I like the first drippy gold one in candle light one the; first one you talked of.
O! and just imagine if someone were to make the basic Rite or Waite deck with just metallic lines? I think that’d be so cool to read with! ❤
